Rebuilding Paradise

Streaming through Art Cinema at Home:

Ron Howard directs this harrowing documentary about the wildfires that destroyed Paradise, California two years ago, and the town’s heroic efforts to literally rise from the ashes. Nightmarish footage of the blaze is given a truly apocalyptic feel by Hans Zimmer’s propulsive score; these scenes of massive destruction make the film’s later sections dealing with the rebuilding so compelling: we see what the townspeople have lost and how much work they have ahead of them. But ultimately it’s a story about community and the emotional connection people have with their neighbors—an optimistic theme much needed in this day and age.

(Rated PG-13 for profanity and scenes of peril.)
