CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Elementary (ages 7-11)

Class fee: $30 per class (non-members, $35 per class)

Button Up

Instructor: Jill Werner

Who’s got the button? Students will create painted paper masterpieces adorned with buttons of various sizes, shapes, and colors. They will learn different painting techniques on paper, cut that paper into abstract designs, and finally use buttons to add depth and texture.

Elementary My Dear

Instructor: Krista Demars

The seven elements of art are line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and color. These elements are the building blocks, or ingredients, of art. We will focus on smaller "Learning" projects that only use one primary element. The final project will be a colorful abstract tempera-paint painting incorporating all seven.

Cool Science Creations!

Instructor: Anne Hoekstra

Did you know you can use science to make art? Using everyday items like rubber bands, balloons, and cooking oil we will discover chemical reactions, physical properties, motion, and more as we create unique works of art.

June 18-21

Abracadabra Art

Instructor: Jill Werner

A picture through time! Students will use paper and colored pencils to create magic “changing” picture accordions from the past to the present. Students will draw, color, shade, cut, and glue their art to become a two-sided masterpiece.

Earth, Wind, and Fire

Instructor: Krista Demars

Learn about our Solar System, planets, stars, and the galaxy we live in. There are many mysteries of the universe, but with science , space travel, and photography we know what most of our solar system looks like as well as the beautiful mystery beyond. Projects will be a colorful string art constellation, an oil pastel painting of the planets, and a paper mache 3-dimensional sun wall hanging.

Furry Friends

Instructor: Shawn Delker

Learn to use a needle and thread to make your own animal creation! Each student will draw a design for an animal and an environment for their chosen animal, then design a pattern to use in making the fabric friend. Needle and thread will be used to make the animals and the student will sew on buttons, lace, and other embellishments.

ART-chitecture!

Instructor: Anne Hoekstra

Explore buildings through time! Learn about architecture and then use found objects to design, build, and decorate your own playsets of the past, present, and future. Also create characters to live in your imagined times.

Lotsa Pasta-bilities!

Instructor: Jill Werner

Students will learn to use clay in a variety of ways by using their hands to sculpt simple pinch pots, animals, and original creations. They will also create abstract designs, patterns, or small landscapes on clay tiles using various kinds and shapes of dried pasta to create patterns and texture.

Animal Action

Instructor: Krista Demars

A fun class if you love animals! We will start our projects learning about the elements of line and shape, and how to show movement in visual art. Using basic shapes to create the likeness of our animals will be the basis, using tigers, horses and an elephants as our subjects. Media will include charcoal, tempera, and acrylic paints on canvas.

Another Dimension: Art in 3D!

Instructor: Krista Demars

This class will focus on dimension, color, and shadows. A variety of materials such as wood, foam, and paint will be used. Projects include a graphic “op-art” style canvas painting, a sculpture piece, and a textile weaving piece
