Fault Diagnosis & Birdless

Fault Diagnosis & Birdless brings together two major projects of artist and writer Anthony Hawley.
Anthony Hawley’s Fault Diagnosis is a multimedia performance event and exhibition that explores what happens when things we think we know so well break down and fail us. At the heart of the project is a 1985 Nissan Pulsar NX, its repair manual and a stranded passenger.
An installation of photo and video work, Birdless explores themes of hoarding, collecting, and the spam of our lives.
In general, Hawley’s work is driven by a fascination with narrative and stories, and the fictions we construct. He is particularly interested in the blending of fiction and reality in our lives and how easily we get lost in between. In a world increasingly subject to a relentless 24-hour news cycle, how do we sift through the multitude of fact and fiction? What gets lost, forgotten, misremembered or tucked away? He creates environments that make room for multiple or competing narratives with installations, objects, performances, and writings that transform everyday images and materials.
about Anthony Hawley
Born in 1977, Anthony Hawley is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. Recipient of fellowships and awards from the MacDowell Colony, the Hermitage Artist Retreat, and Arte Studio Ginistrelle among others, he has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. His environments, installations, and performances have been presented at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta, Malta; Vox Populi in Philadelphia; Dolphin Gallery in Kansas City; the Museum of Nebraska Art and elsewhere. In April 2016 his multidisciplinary performance work, “Fault Diagnosis” was presented by CounterCurrent, The Menil Colleciton, and Aurora Picture Show in Houston, TX. A five-day multimedia event, “Fault Diagnosis” appeared across the city of Houston engaging audiences with new technologies, live performance, video, and a 1985 Nissan Pulsar NX. In general, his hybrid practice is driven by a fascination with narrative, story, and the fictions we construct.
Most recently, with Chiara String Quartet violinist Rebecca Fischer, he forms The Afield, a multidisciplinary collaboration for violin, video, and electronics. The duo has premiered new and original works at venues such as National Sawdust in Brooklyn, Bay Chamber Concerts in Maine, the North Dakota Museum of Art, and the Harare Festival of the Arts in Harare, Zimbabwe. In 2018 The Afield will open The Afield School, an organization pioneering interdisciplinary art and performance.
Hawley writes regularly on art and film and his poems and essays have been published widely in The Paris Review, The New Republic, Denver Quarterly, Verse, The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, and many more. He is the author of two full-length collections of poetry and several chapbooks. In 2018, Print the Future Press in Amsterdam will publish an art book of his complete Drawings for Donald, a year-long daily drawing project.
Hawley has taught at Fordham University, the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the School of Art, Art History, and Design at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his MFA in Writing from Columbia University as well as an MFA in Art Practice from The School of Visual Arts.
