A man loses his family in an accident but gains an extraordinary power: the power to stop time.
Salina, KS – Suspension, the second film in a six-film series presented by the Kansas Film Commission, will show at the Art Center Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe, on Saturday, September 12, at 9:10 pm. This film series, The Free State Traveling Picture Show, was developed to help get Kansas-made films into community theatres statewide.
Suspension, produced and co-directed by Kansas native, Ethan Shaftel, delves into the question, “What would you really do if you had the power to stop time?” The story unfolds as Daniel loses his wife and son in a car accident. While slowly recovering from his injuries, he rebuilds his son’s video camera that was damaged in the crash. Infused with power from the moment of the crash, the camera develops the ability to stop time when Daniel presses the pause button. This discovery restores Daniel’s sense of purpose, and he fills the vacuum in his life by taking responsibility for another victim, Sarah, a newlywed who lost her husband in the same accident. But Daniel’s good intentions shift as the power begins to change him irrevocably.
Suspension is the first feature film from easyAction Pictures—a collective owned by directors Ethan Shaftel and Alec Joler, writer/producer Aris Blevins, and producer/AD Kevin Obsatz. It was filmed in Lawrence, Topeka, and Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri, with support from the Kansas Film Commission. The cast is regional, while the crew is one-third local, one-third from Los Angeles, and one-third from the independent-film community of Minneapolis.
In recent years, advances in film-production technology have spurred dramatic increases in the quantity and quality of locally produced films nationwide, including Kansas. Kansas films often play in film festivals across the world, including major festivals such as Sundance and South by Southwest.
One of the hardest aspects of the filmmaking process is finding distribution avenues for completed films. Kansas happens to have a large number of independent and historic theatres located in communities statewide that are constantly looking for unique entertainment for their respective communities. It seemed like a natural fit to design a program that brought filmmakers and venues together in way that was mutually beneficial.
– Peter Jasso, Director, Kansas Film Commission
