Salina, KS – Fight Night, directed by Kansas native and University of Southern California Film School graduate Jonathan Dillon, will show at the Art Center Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe, on Saturday, July 25, at 9:00 pm.  This film is the first in a six-film series, The Free State Traveling Picture Show, produced by the Kansas Film Commission and developed to help get Kansas-made films into community theaters statewide.

Filmed on location in Kansas City and Los Angeles, Fight Night is the story of full-time con man Michael Dublin (Chad Ortis) working the underground boxing circuit. A lonely drifter on the run from a past best forgotten, he moves from one scam to another, leaving a trail of enemies in his wake. Dublin invents his best con yet when he meets Katherine “Kat” Parker (Kansas City native Rebecca Neuenswander), a female fighter with the skills to take down a man twice her size. In a scheme Dublin calls “fight rigging, in reverse”, the two hit the road working fights in seedy basement bars, abandoned warehouses and backwoods county fairs. But when Dublin’s shady past catches up with them, the stakes are suddenly higher - and more dangerous - than they’d ever imagined.

In recent years, advances in film-production technology have spurred dramatic increases in the quantity and quality of locally produced films nationwide, including Kansas. Kansas films often play in film festivals across the world, including major festivals like Sundance and South by Southwest.

One of the hardest aspects of the film-making process is finding distribution avenues for completed films. Kansas happens to have a large number of independent and historic theaters located in communities statewide that are constantly looking for unique entertainment for their respective communities. It seemed like a natural fit to design a program that brought filmmakers and venues together in way that was mutually beneficial.
– Peter Jasso, Director, Kansas Film Commission

The next film in the Free State Traveling Picture Show series, Suspension, will show at the Art Center Cinema in September, 2009.
