Salina, KS – Eric Monder, professor of film and English at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas, will present a celebration of Kansas’s rich cultural history and an entertaining overview of the many talented actors and performers who hail from Kansas at the Art Center Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe, on Saturday, July 11, from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm.
During this special Art Center Cinema event, Monder will examine how their Kansas roots have played a role in the development of the careers of many Kansas film stars. Highlights include rare and never-before-seen footage of Dennis Hopper (Dodge City), Buster Keaton (Piqua), Annette Bening (Topeka), Zasu Pitts (Parsons), Hattie McDaniel (Oscar winner as Mammy in Gone With The Wind, Wichita), Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle (Smith Center), Emmett Kelly (“Weary Willie” the Circus Clown, Sedan), Larry Parks (Al Jolson in The Jolson Story, Olathe), Kirstie Alley (Wichita), Louise Brooks (Cherryvale), Vivian Vance (Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy, Cherryvale), Don Johnson (Wichita), Mary Howard (Ann Routledge in Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Independence), Madge Blake (Aunt Harriet on Batman, Kinsley), Dwight Frye (Igor in Frankenstein and Renfield in Dracula, Salina), Eugene Pallette (Robin Hood’s Friar Tuck, Winfield), Oscar Micheaux (Murder in Harlem star and director, Great Bend), Patrice Wymore (Mrs. Errol Flynn, Miltonvale and Salina), Jeanne Eagels (Kansas City), Charles “Buddy” Rogers (Mr. Mary Pickford, Olathe), Ed Asner (Lou Grant, Kansas City), Steve Brodie (El Dorado), Carl Spitzer (Alfalfa in The Little Rascals, Pretty Prairie), and many more!
To register for The Stars of Kansas, please call the Salina Art Center at 785.827.1431, by Tuesday, July 7. The fee is just $20 per person, and there must be a minimum enrollment of 10 people.
