About Abstraction: New Approaches by Contemporary Artists

Opening Reception: September 11, 5-7pm

Approximately 100 years after its birth, abstract art continues to generate perplexing questions, conflicting opinions, and passionate conversations among viewers—and, among artists, a continuing interest in the challenge of creating compelling work that communicates thought without realistically imitating existing scenes or objects.

About Abstraction features four contemporary artists whose work provides a representative sampling of the diverse ideas and materials that are currently being explored through abstraction.  James Brinsfield (Kansas City MO), Matthew Burke (Lawrence KS), Allie Rex (Brooklyn NY), and Frank Shaw (Lindsborg KS) utilize their distinctive styles in drawing, painting, and sculpture to convey beauty and meaning in highly individualized ways.  Their work invites inquiry, reflection, and energetic discussion of the underlying content that shapes artistic vision.

Organized by the Salina Art Center.
