Mid-August probably doesn’t mean much to Americans (except that it’s when school usually starts after the summer break); it may be helpful to note that “Ferragosto,” from the film’s original title, is an Italian holiday (Aug. 15), similar to Labor Day, in which businesses shut down and everyone goes to the beach.  For Gianni, the film’s protagonist, every day’s a bit like Labor Day (or Ferragosto): he’s a laid-back, middle-aged slacker who seems to want nothing more out of life than to take…
