The Community Project

In November of 2004, a group gathered at the Salina Art Center to consider the myriad ways that eating both reveals and reflects community concerns. As a result of this initial meeting and the others that followed, the community Eating project was born. The Salina Art Center anchors the project with a major exhibition of contemporary art exploring the subject of eating. A host of other organizations are participating in the exploration of eating as a community concern. Wherever you see the Pac-Man-inspired, open-mouthed logo embedded in the first letter of “eating,” you’ll know you’ve found a part of the Eating project.

CLASS
Community Learning And Skill Sharing is a vibrant lifelong education program offering courses that promote personal growth and community discourse. Instructors are mostly volunteers who are interested in sharing their special skill or knowledge in a casual atmosphere at the library and a variety of places around Salina. Enrollment and tuition may be required for CLASS programs. For details check online at www.salpublib.org or call 785-825-4626.

Community Recipe Collection
The Salina Public Library will coordinate the community recipe collection – pages will be designed and printed at the library and a public notebook will be provided for collecting pages. People may come in and read and/or copy pages from October through December.

Food TV
Look for a new Access TV 3-part series, Food for Thought. Host Paul Archer from Kansas Wesleyan University will film three programs in restaurants around the area with guests discussing the importance of food and its role as nourishment, gift, culinary art and cultural tradition in celebrations of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Food Quilt Documentary
Lauren Hendrick, Central High senior and intern at Community Access TV, will be documenting Tania Candiani’s residency at the Salina Art Center. Tania will share meals and conversation with students, factory workers, and homemakers throughout the community, and then with the general public on September 18 from 1-5pm at the Art Center. Tania will assist participants in preserving their favorite foods in vacuum-sealed bags, to be attached together and made into a translucent “quilt” to be hung in the Art Center’s front windows.

Hatch Show Prints: Letterpress Posters Old & New
If you follow country music history or the culture of the American South, sooner or later you’re bound to run into the unmistakable “look” of Hatch Show Print in Nashville. A selection of Hatch posters, including some with eating-related subjects, will be on display October 27-December 8 in the Watson Gallery at the Stiefel Theatre. Hatch has a local connection: manager Jim Sherraden is a Salina native, and will be present on October 27 for a reception and sale, 5-7pm. At 7pm Sherraden will give a presentation about the creative and archival work he and his staff do at Hatch Show Print.

From Miniatures to Metaphors
Salina artist Becky Hyberger’s recent work in her continuing theme “From Miniatures to Metaphors” is on display at three area churches. The two main exhibits are located at the west entrance of St. Elizabeth’s Church and on the west wall of the gathering space of Sacred Heart Cathedral, with an additional single piece at St. Mary’s New Parish Hall. The work reflects on the Eucharist and Scripture as a way of nourishing the soul through life’s spiritual journey, and will be on view through December.
