"The land is always trying to shed the various skins people make it wear. But even as men and women constantly change the land and impose different landscapes on it, the land also changes them. Thus, the settlers cultivated the prairie, imposing an agricultural landscape, and the prairie cultivated them, harvesting them into the people of this land. The land claimed and transformed them into the particular people of a specific place. The prairie allowed them to grow roots; the land gave them an identity, as place provides identity to people everywhere. Therefore, the destiny of the land has been and will become their destiny; what the land becomes they too will become."
